The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
