The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
