Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
