Police stated they were contacted by a individual who found a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored fluid

Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Police then located many other marked cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely human blood.

"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

An important representative commented the incident left him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
